Jogya-Yogyakarta and Borobodur

We have left the capital city and are now in the much more chilled out, far less densely populated city of Jogya.

It is the cultural and educational centre of Indonesia. We awoke at 3am this morning and drove to the ancient Buddhist temple called Borobudur-

We walked up by torch light and watched the sun rise over Mount Merapi, an active volcano where we will tomorrow night!
It was a serene and beautiful place and an opportunity I will not forget.

Many of the heads of the statues were cut off.....I wonder if anyone can find out why? Email me and let me know what you think.

  10. The Buddha images were decapitated when Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese in 1767. This was done to remove precious items - gold, jewels and other relics - placed inside the statue when they were made. The images were made of bricks and mortar with the fine details modeled in plaster and then painted.
